JAMES DAYRIT (Philippines, b. 1972) who holds a degree in marine engineering, is applying his knowledge to a series of experiments to create sculptures of stainless steel, brass, urethane-finished black iron, aluminium wire sculptures, and other mixed media. He managed his father’s workshop assembling jeepney parts for many years. His entry into the art world was purely accidental. One day, he decided to make a similar statue hanging on the telephone wall of his store.  He posted his work online, and a buyer liked his work, bought it and ordered four similar sculptures from him. This chance meeting led him to start sculpturing in 2014. Many opportunities came, including commissioned works for hotels and apartments for clients such as SMDC, and private collectors.

Dayrit has participated in several group shows and received an Honourable Mention at the 2019 GSIS National Art Competition. For Dayrit, the doors are open to many opportunities he is willing to accept to pursue his creativity and passion for sculptural work. He believes that flexibility is necessary because metals have different types of malleability. Art must continue to thrive, and the artist must continue to evolve – it is part of his creative process.
