Born in Taiwan and known as “Joker,” CHIEN LIN (b.1984, Taipei Taiwan) graduated from Tamkang University’s Department of Mathematics in 2008. Immersed in the creative world from a young age, he consistently studied art-related subjects and served as Creative Director of Jokerman Studio, a digital art atelier. He considers art as an essential part of his daily life, constantly exploring and refining his craft. Through his unique creative vision, he transforms ordinary things into visual expressions brimming with limitless possibilities and joyful energy. He hopes that everyone who views his work will experience healing and happiness.
His cartoon-inspired style embodies elements that reflect our times. These elements have grown with us from childhood to adulthood, establishing themselves as a common visual language that transcends media, generations, and borders. Embracing this style is how he responds to and reinterprets contemporary culture.
Joker is fascinated by the intense color contrasts, the spontaneity of hand-drawn lines, and the delightful unpredictability of collage in his work. These elements create visual tension and dynamic energy, balancing cuteness and chaos, order and wildness, and he finds deep joy in these elements during his creative process.
A closer look reveals Chinese characters etched into the eyes of his characters. For him, Chinese is not simply a language; it’s a powerful cultural symbol and a medium of expression. Graffiti isn’t limited to the alphabet. The strokes and meanings of Chinese characters carry a visual weight and profound meaning that suggest much in his work.
For Joker, art is freedom, play and a declaration of identity. He draws inspiration from everyday life: desserts, animals, selfies, poker cards, and street slogans. These seemingly random elements are actually fragments of observation and emotional reflection rearranged on canvas.
Each work is a visual diary, an emotional landscape, and a cultural mirror. He hopes that viewers will not only find visual pleasure, but also sense the warmth, depth, and even a sense of familiarity within his work.
