ELIE QUIAL (b. 1977, Samar, Philippines) earned a Diploma in Fashion Design from the Art Institute of Vancouver in Canada in 2013. A self-taught multimedia artist, painter, and muralist, her creative path is rooted in curiosity, movement, and reinvention. She grew up in Borongan City, a vibrant coastal city in the eastern Philippines. Surrounded by lush forests, sun-drenched beaches, and dazzling coral gardens, this landscape fostered her love of organic forms, layered textures, and the beauty of the wild.
She has lived and worked in the fashion, hospitality and aviation industries for 18 years in Qatar, Canada, and the United Arab Emirates. Her early experiments with fabric, rhythm, and form, stemming from her fashion design background, evolved into a broader, and more expressive artistic practice encompassing painting, textiles, and large-scale murals. Today, her work combines paint, ink, paper, and fabric to create vibrant, multi-layered compositions that feel both raw and intentional.
Quial’s artistic practice evolves through experimentation. She finds beauty in imperfection. Examples include crooked shapes, mismatched patterns, and vibrant hues that reflect her bold personality. She transforms discarded denim jackets into wearable works of art by combining sewing and painting, breathing new life into forgotten materials. For her, creation is both a joy and a necessity. It’s a whirlwind where love and chaos coexist, and failure becomes part of discovery.
Nature and memory play a central role in her work. She draws inspiration from the transient properties of light and shadow, often utilizing natural elements and found objects to create deep and multi-dimensional narratives. Her paintings invite viewers to contemplate the connections between environment and memory, celebrating the turbulence of life and its healing beauty.
